Revisiting the old Adamson Chronicle office
November 20th, 2007 posted by JB under Adamson Chronicle

Adamson Chronicle

These are videos from “Invaderzim” (who’s probably former Chronicler Michael Gallego former graphic artist Alfred Jurcalis), showing a bunch of folks revisiting the old Adamson Chronicle office at the SV Penthouse. We have no idea when these were taken, so Invaderzim, please provide the context.

Anyway, the high point of the second video below is when the cameraman finds the old framed photo of the Adamson Chronicle (snapshot above). It was I think made in the late 1980s and shot by photographer Randy Rivera (who’s working in the US now with his family). Randy has tons of stories how they came to composing the shot, and the surrounding circumstances (it was a time of fervent student activism), and he’d probably freak out if he’d see it just sitting there waiting to be thrown out.

Video 1:

Video 2:

This last video feels like finding an archaeological relic: the white board. The old “writings on the wall” are still there, the last messages of desperation and hope. Well, alright, I don’t wanna sound like people died or something, but despite what resentment I feel about the last batch of Chroniclers (I still tend to “blame” them for bringing about the end of the paper’s old era), I can’t help but empathize.

And one more thing: there’s something missing in the view from the terrace: the old Jai Alai building. I’m sure many of those from my batch and earlier would say that single building alone was witness to many sessions of making out with their partners. LOL!
Video 3:

Bottomline: there’s a new batch, closely supervised by the admin and advised by one fine human being (Miss Arlene, just tell me when to stop being a cloying suck-ass. lol), and all I can say is: I hope this new setup will allow the student paper to reach its full potential (just like what they say in Lactum commercials). First, there should be more funds now (the 300 thousand or so per sem was so insufficient, it had been making the old Chroniclers cut one another’s throats), and I hope this new batch will fully make use of new technologies.

Let me just say this: they are so darned lucky. So I really hope that kind of luck works for them.

Damn,it’s in pieces! Hayy,i still miss those days..fresh pa rin sa senses ko ko ung feeling ng first time makatungtong sa opisinang yan. I will forever cherish that memory. taena namimiss ko nang maging chronicler!!

“that single building alone was witness to many sessions of making out…”

aha!!!

now alam ko na kung bakit nisaway ako ni Mrs. Gamboa (former PE instructor, the aunt of Sharon Cuneta) na wag umakyat dun sa taas! that’s when the former photographer of Chronicle (circa 1987) invited me for a photo shoot kase kala niya ako yung nanalo na Bb. Freshman ‘87. bwahahah!!! (i wasn’t. LOL!)

now JB, don’t ever wonder why i used to think that the male staff of Chronicle were perves. not generalizing ha? LOL! ang mag-react… GUILTY!

who’s that photographer? i forgot his name. hindi naman sha mukhang nerd. ende rin sha matangkad. mabait sha actually.

does anyone know/remember?

[ # 1378 ] Comment from JB [November 21, 2007, 1:19 am]

deity, if that was 1987, it would be Mar Bustamante, who eventually went on to work as the university’s official photog (yearbook and the adamson newsletter). he was still there in 1999, but i’m not sure if he’s still working for them now.

about “pervinesss”… he he. hindi ko na lang sasabihin yung sa generation namin, but let me just say that the venerable Maryo Acyatan would usually “lure” the staff with the generous availability of Playboy magazines around the office just to encourage them to “make tambay.” masyadong mataas kasi ang penthouse, kaya usually tinatamad ang mga staff na umakyat dun. and once you’re there, nakakatamad na ring bumaba. :D

i think by 1999, it was those damn high school kids who were using the terrace to make out pag wala ang staff. sayang hindi pa uso noon ang motion-capture webcams. lol

[ # 1379 ] Comment from deity [November 21, 2007, 2:22 am]

yeah. is that him? do you know where i can contact him? he’s got a picture of me and ogie alcasid. ahahhah! i want a copy! LOL!

hay naku, yung SV dati eh girls high, di ba? tapos yung sa CS yung boys. is that right? gawd. alzheimers.

hala, ipahanap mo sa kanya mga freshman photos mo at i-share mo sa amin. he he he

[ # 1381 ] Comment from deity [November 21, 2007, 2:49 pm]

coolness! if you have seen my college photos in Friendsters, the Bb. LA ‘90 post pageant pic, Mar was the one who took that one.

i should write to him and harass him. i need that picture with Ogie. hahahaha!

nGAYON, HAWAK NA NG ADMIN ANG TAC, YES YES YES YO NA LANG KAPAG TUITION FEE CONSULTATIONS.

[ # 1406 ] Comment from plumb [November 30, 2007, 10:47 am]

[ # 1407 ] Comment from stiban_graffiti [November 30, 2007, 12:48 pm]

Yung NO FAILING GRADE POLICY, sabihin mo yan kay Edison, Einstein, at Bonifacio.

Me rally bukas para sa tfi, yung ausg president di pwedeng sumama kasi me thesis sya. Sarili muna. sarili muna. sarili muna.

Asan na tayo? me nagawa ba sila.

1. Illegal na pagpapasara.
2. TInapon yung archives at old issues.
3. Me adviser.

[ # 1408 ] Comment from JB [November 30, 2007, 2:43 pm]

stiban, i’m assuming you know exactly what happened with the chronicle that it ended up that way? the exact circumstances and all that jazz? would you care to share it with us?

yung issue about the no failing grade policy, i understand that, although when i was a student i was also very rabid about it. the rationale seems to be, everyone enrolled at the university is first and foremost a STUDENT, and a student’s major business is to study. if a student writer or a student leader fails in this major business of studying for the sake of an extra-curricular activity (chronicle and ausg), kahiya hiya naman sa mga magulang ng student na yun, hindi ba. and if you fail in your own grades, that would mean you’re losing your status as a student, and if you’re losing your status as a student, then what the hell is your business with the university in the first place if you’re no longer a legit student? alam mo, i also used to regard it as an oppressive measure to “control” the students, but somehow i see the broad point of it. it’s not about being bobo, it’s about legitimacy, it’s about not missing the point why you’re in adamson in the first place. sure, you can play hotshot ausg president or chronicle editor, but only as long as you’re not sacrificing your academics and not wasting the money your parents burn to send you to school, hindi ba. syempre, all that activism is a lot of fun, but at the end of the day, you still don’t earn your own money and are still heavily dependent on the good graces of other people (aka, “parents”).

so kung humihingi ka lang ng baon at pamasahe sa nanay mo, how can you delude yourself about your self-proclaimed bravado and think you can stop something as systematic and massive as tfi?

now i’m not “defending” the admin, but many of the things we believed in when we were younger were simply because there were many things we couldn’t see or understand back then.

i welcome the new chronicle because, based on what i’ve seen in the last few years of the old paper, the chronicle stopped “chronicling” and turned out to be far from what the old generations would have hoped for. ngayon kung papipiliin mo ako between the old “adviser-free” chronicle who was “running wildly in the dark” in terms of running a student paper, and this new student paper directly managed by the admin, i will choose the present one. you know why? because that’s the only way the paper can continue thriving. that’s the only way it can get decent funding. that’s the only way it can be “guided” by a mature manager (adviser). and by “mature”, i mean one who oversees the paper in the long term, and not by the limited one-year tenure of the ed-board. in management, importante iyan pare. dahil ang term ng ed board ay isang taon lang, they tend to think in the short term — they always try to do as much as they can cram in one year, usually by sacrificing succeeding generations. in a way, it’s a form of shortsighted selfishness.

but with the “guidance” of somebody who will stay with the paper for a long time, then finally the chronicle will have something called “long-term direction.” it will re-establish the old office norms, and hopefully the paper will be fully reassimilated with the entire community. but let’s just wait and see; hindi pa nga sila nakakapaglabas ng first issue e. let’s give the kids a chance. he he he

[ # 1411 ] Comment from Josh [November 30, 2007, 3:19 pm]

1. The new TAC will not be controlled by OSA.

2. Ms. Arlene Paredes will be an advising the TAC because not everyone in the editorial board has experience in campus journalism. Have no fear, they are well screened in written and oral examinations.

3. First week of January will be the target date of release of the new Chronicle.

4. Annual tuition fee increase is normal in every school. I do not know about the law, but I think CHED and/or the government already approved that decades ago.

5. Ironically, OSA urges the new TAC to blast and exploit professors which are not performing well.

6. They’ll still use “The Adamson Chronicle” but have the logo and layout facelifted.

7. I don’t like the “No Failing Grade” policy. Now I know why there are only few engineering students in AUSG.

8. Visit the school again and you will agree that the facilities have vastly improved. Try to check out the ST Theater, the fully air conditioned classrooms (JP building before 2005 = HELL; Now they are FREEZERS, they have the coldest classrooms), the comfort rooms are recently renovated, the ST canteen refurbished (standing while eating is the thing of the past now), plasma TV’s are scattered around the school grounds, the new landscape and facade of SV building, and even Estero de Balete is now getting better.

Eh sobrang napaka-ano nila.

Next time uli kasi me pupuntahan pa ako eh.

sasali lang po ako sa usapan with regards the TFI. yung ausg leadership lang ang pwedeng makapigil dyan based on ched regulations, as far as i know. if they employ the legal means to do it instead of resorting to extralegal means or thru street parliamentarians.

based on my experience, we were able to cut down the proposed 12% tfi in 1996-1997 school year to 6% by presenting a valid argument before the board composed of the admin, the alumni, the chronicle, and the teacherts’ association. during the first few rounds of meetings the admin discussed the proposals. the ausg presented their position and we laid out the practicality, necessity and benefits of not having the increase. we created a discussion where it almost seemed like a debate. after the first few meetings, it was a stalemate. and based on the regulations, it was up to the alumni to decide what would be the best option.

i remember meeting the officers of the alumni, composed of oldies…some faces you would not recognize. yet they had the power back then to decide on our fate.

They asked us what our stand was, and we stated that based on inflation and economics, students could not afford the 12% increase. considering also the kind of facilitis we had back in 1995, it was not justifiable. after the discussions, we were finally able to have a good feel that the 12% was met by the alumni to be too high. it was decided by them to just increase it to 6%.

not many know this. the ausg officers who preceded me do not know how to negotiate and present a valid argument.

the strategy therefore is not to take to the streets. if the same rules apply, which is alumni eventually deciding in case of a stalemate…then the best course of action is to lobby or better yet infiltrate the alumni so that the studentry could get a good fighting chance.

hope this advice gets heard.

bottomline…

kung may bagong chron, so be it.
kung hawak sila ng admin, so be it.

if you were part of the last ed board, you probably know in the last few months, i was actually [despite my increasing resentment over the stupid things i had been hearing about what was happening in the office back then] trying to help you. im not sure if silvere borromeo relayed to any of you my “salvage plans,” but the simple point is even when they’re backed against a wall, the ed board remained ridiculously arrogant and probably treated my “negotiate with the admin and reach a compromise” proposal with the chronicle’s usual “chronic” suspicion. alam mo na, mention “admin” and “compromise” and the chronicle’s reaction would be “he’s probably in cahoots with them.”

and remember, too, how i offered (with alvin julian) to temporarily finance the paper (because of your funding problems) and directly handle its editorial management (because the content was becoming really terrible) for a year just so you can negotiate and bring you back on your feet. that was early 2005, buddy. can you guess what kind of reception i got?

bottomline, when i began seeing as early as 2003 that the paper’s editorial direction was getting worse (remember when i actually edited an entire issue of the paper during ria’s term? yeah, i did that. that was 2003. and the quality of the articles submitted to me depressed me for days), i would usually tell the chronicle guys what they should do, and like erwin ilao previously said, you do it effectively by negotiation. unfortunately, that’s not what the ed board did. even in the very last months of its life, it remained cocky even when it no longer had anything to be cocky about.

to be fair with you guys, maybe my generation “had taught” and left you that climate of suspicion. the “arrogance” and the misled sense of “independence” started as early as 1994 and probably the reason why it eventually got killed by the admin. for everyone’s understanding, maybe i’ll write clearly about this later…

Damn JB, you really did that? Wow!

Oh my, I didn’t know na ganito na pala ang nangyayari noon. Nandito na ako sa Dubai nun..

No doubt hindi nagwaver ang malasakit mo sa paper JB and I am glad that there are former editors like you and Alvin. As for me, don’t ask. I flew to escape it all. Kakahiya mang aminin but that’s the truth. To abandon everything you have once fought for (and was ready to die for) because I realized that no matter what you do, at the end of the day you still have to eat. But I digress..

What happened to the publication is really disappointing. I was saddened by it’s sudden closure. Pero ngayon at least I am happy it’s revived. I won’t jump into assumptions. Magoobserve muna ko and possibly offer any help I can..

once naging part din ako ng adamson chronicle, we experienced campus repression during that time, the admin closed our office and we have no choice kundi sa kalsada gumawa ng newspaper. di rin kami pinayagan ipasok ang issue sa loob ng campus. how sad na parang history repeats itself when i knew whats goin on sa tac ngayon.

[ # 1515 ] Comment from greg [January 17, 2008, 9:46 am]

i still rmber the palaban na issue na ginawa namin with Dennis Torrecampo as our eic, isang black colored magazine, isang issue na matindi naging impact sa adamsonian. matapos ang issue na un we face libel suit case ng admin, mostly ng staff ay expelled tinira kc sila sa failing grades. masaya na malungkot tn nakakatakot during that time, ang gulo talga, sumabay pa kc ung frat wars. after maybe a month nag open again ang tac, kc its clear na campus press repression ang ginawa ng admin, bumalik kmi sa opis dala dala ang computer na gnamit namin sa labas, mga past issues ng chronicle, and it is clear pa sakin na ako ang natago ng isang laminated frame ng chronicle, we start again sa work pero and pumalit na eic during that time ay mejo moderate na sbi nila. i didnt stay longer sa tac kc graduating nko during that time. para sa present board just do your job for the adamsonian, if u feel na ur being repress do something kc kyo ang boses ng adamsonian. ask sna ako ng mga available issues nyo kung meron pa.

[ # 1516 ] Comment from JB [January 18, 2008, 9:07 am]

hey, greg, i still have a copy of that black issue. dennis even helped out in making this 1994 red issue:

hi!

i am one of the bunch of chronicle alumni nung panahon ni dennis torrecampo. i wrote for TAC nang about three years (EICs: the late donnielou montalban, rino reginio and then dennis). i think yung kay icthys (as DT calls himself) ang pinakarurok ng buhay ko sa adamson, at natikman namin na maisara ang TAC (at gumawa ng protest posters sa harap nag EAC). it was worth the fight though on hindsight it was a losing battle against the then triumvirate of delagoza, dytian at yung pinaslang na security officer. sa mga bagong usbong na manunulat ng TAC, tama nga at may adviser na kayo (mula sa admin, which we DREADED and STRONGLY OPPOSED during our time) pero dapat hindi yan makahadlang sa naisin ninyo ng maglahad ng istorya para sa mga inyong mambabasa, ang mga mag-aaral ng adamson.

pagbati!

[ # 2155 ] Comment from dentorrecampo [April 21, 2008, 2:42 pm]

if there are lessons we have to heed from past, present and future of the adamson chronicle and campus journalism in general, it is these:

1. accept the adversarial role of journalism, but use it to further a good crusade (and make sure you’ve justified the advocacy/ies within yourself a million times before even beginning to write about them). a sharp pen that only punches on empty air is an aimless tirade, not a noble cause.

2. there is a time to fight, to negotiate, to be the mouthpiece, and to seek consensus. but whatever the case or the cause–never, ever compromise your right to write.

3. democracy is fighting an idea with a better idea. so do your homework first, and be a writer for crying out loud (ask, and scrutinize!) when all else fails, agree to disagree.

4. when it seems to be a losing battle, self-blame does not solve anything. it just means you have not processed the issue well enough to come up with solutions. take more time out then press back on.

5. love what you do, but know when to distance yourself. when you come back for the next round, you would’ve seen it with different eyes and your writing flows wildly and wonderfully. you stop writing when you stop learning.

especially to editors: appreciate and understand the uniqueness of your situations. we are all given our distinct challenges only once–the timeliness of our cause, how we assess our environments, and other nuances. but it takes a leader to solder on when nothing seems to make sense, and a loser to accept things as “normal” then waste away and be forgotten.

Hi JB,

That old framed photo of the Adamson Chronicle was actually taken by the late Donnielou Montalban. I was a staffwriter/artist then (1987-89) and i think i still have a copy of that issue. Grabe! ano na nagyari sa Chronicle? Batch namin ang nagpa-carpet, wallpaper, aircon at furnishings dyan pati yung whiteboard at refridgerator thanks to Dennis Solatan who preceded Donnie.

Well there’s been a lot of “issues” ang Chronicle even in those days pero syempre parte na ng buhay ika nga.

Batchmates ko among others (sana wala akong nakalimutan):
Dennis S, Donnie, Maryo, Rino, Resty, Mashhur, Alwyn, Flor, Richard, Riz, Arbee, Greg?…

Kmusta na kayo? Paramdam naman dyan at SANA MAY REUNION.

Mabuhay ang TAC! Mabuhay ang mga nerds! (joke)

ei ka bel (and icthys too!)

musta na. arbee here. sana nga magka-reunion tayo. he he!! dito ako ngayon sa abu dhabi working as a page editor for a new newspaper (www.thenational.ae) ang huling may balita ako is dennis is earning megabucks of uncle sam’s currency while riz, well, is still eating kanin-bangus with rice… ang tinik spouting in the mouth! ha ha ha!! i miss the glory days of the ‘OLD’ chronicle. (sorry guys and gals - the younger ones - you thrashed the legacy by coming out with a ‘volume one’, which i find a pejorative remark to those who toiled before you, non-conformist or otherwise).

just the same, good luck to you new chronicle guys and gals! i heard you get editorial support from the AdU administration. not bad, but not necessarily good either.

[ # 2464 ] Comment from razzahsleb [May 19, 2008, 4:52 am]

Yoohoo! arbee! Last time i saw you 1990 pa. So happy for you pare.
Resty i believe is vice president for public affairs sa STI here though di pa kami nagkita since 1997 sa bday ni Donnie with Vic and Rino. Art director ako for DDB Worldwide handling the McDo account.
Ano?

Yeah, good luck to the new Chronicle!

PS:
Sorry JB nag-triple post ako by mistake.
