China is all set to rule the world
July 23rd, 2007 posted by JB under Bits & Pieces

I think it was Jose Rizal who had said it more than a century ago that “China is a sleeping giant,” or something to that effect (Pepe Alas, feel free to correct my inaccuracies). The truth of that could strike you starkly in the eye if you’d look at the latest forex reserves by country, which indicates that China currently tops the world for having $1.3 trillion. Even the USA stands only at 19th (thanks to George Bush for ballooning that country’s deficit by trillions more), a fact that puts it in China’s debt (you can say China has the USA’s ass and it can actually sink that country if it desires). While the Philippines is 37th with $26.4 billion.

Currently, people are curious if you could actually live without using “Made In China” products, as this reporter found out how tricky it is. All these make studying the dynamics of China’s economy very compelling — and maybe this present century, if the USA continues mucking it up, will prove to be China’s century.

I’m not sure if it’s good or bad.

you know, more and more ESL teachers here are migrating to China. those who have moved there testified that the pay and teaching conditions are a lot better compared to Japan and Korea. and to think that the cost of living there is not as pricey ha…

hmmm…

let’s go to China! now na!

[ # 1137 ] Comment from Pepe Alas [September 13, 2007, 3:48 am]

I’m not sure who originally said that, but it was definitely not Rizal.

Yeah but that seems to be the opening phrase on Asian Civilization classes when the chapter begins with China.

I was amazed more with the topic on India.

Now, Steven Spielberg ditched his Beijing Olympics stint for apparent reasons.

China, as I can see has been awaken…
Look at they are dominating world sports…
Even Americans predicted that by 2012, they can overtake Uncle Sam in terms of winning the most golds in the quadrennail games…

[ # 2097 ] Comment from JB [April 12, 2008, 4:41 am]

yeah, turns out, it wasn’t rizal, but napoleon III:

Napoleon III compared China to a sleeping giant and warned: “When China awakes, she will shake the world.”

i’ve had the privilege of working in china (nanjing, neighboring shanghai) for more than a year, and my short-sighted (kasi bitin, but find out why later) impressions follow:

1. it is bursting with new life but reeking of old attitudes and lifestyles. modernization is on the rise, construction-wise. but it also suffers from an ancient population suddenly bulldozed with high-rise skyscrapers and infrastructure. imagine the flinstones trapped in the jetsons world.

2. they need all the reserves for the HUGE population they’re dealing with. as for these monies trickling down the masses’ pockets, i’ll leave that to the “china invented corruption” theory. so far, the people do not expect much materially (it’s all in the mao-era mindset), are controlled communist-style (big bro really is watching), so it’s one ugly giant boiling pot waiting to unravel IF the money turns up stolen or corrupted.

3. human rights remains one sorry state of affairs (mention internet blogging and people freeze due to reports of “anti-china” critics getting caught and punished). i wanted to visit tibet or the mongolian region but was warned against all possible dangers so i just ended up exploring the mainland.

4. the middle kingdom thankfully has preserved much of its beautiful sceneries and natural reserves. i had the pleasure of climbing huang shan (a two-day trek if you don’t use the cable cars…and i didn’t kaya pamatay! eh diba may pababa pa!). huang shan is the famous yellow(huang) mountain(shan) in anhui province, also home to artists who have at various times written and painted the mountain magically. it’s really heaven up there. another personal favorite is the hangzhou west lake, especially in spring when the flowers spread their wonderful aroma (a far sigh indeed from the infamous amoy tsekwa–vestige of times past). this time, the place brims with romantic lores and is touted as asia’s vienna, according to european expats there. for me, it’s like walking in a surreally wonderful dream only it’s more vivid and lasting.

5. each region has distinct traits. nanjing, for one, is the greener and semi-modern state (home to their hero, sun yat sen). shanghai is the financial capital (cosmo, congested, expensive) while beijing is the state capital (big bro’s throne). unfortunately, i haven’t been to beijing! i fell in love kasi with hangzhou (saw it transform in the four seasons i went there hehe) and guilin-a true postcard-beauty of hills mirrored in silent waters and bangka-riding populace. just google images and see their magic or if you get the chance of a lifetime, go there! but bring your chinese teacher/ translator/ dictionary hehehe (my mandarin classes came free with the job).

having said that, china is ready for the world if they can let go of their old temperaments and be in the magnifying glass of world scrutiny. but i doubt that america or even the big guys of G-7(?) are giving up the superpower role. no wonder the trouble in tibet is catching worldwide attention.

india is another story, a different tactic that may even be a scary or welcome reality, depending on who’s looking.

the real question is: quo vadis, pilipinas?

there’s this disputed saying that if all the chinks would jump simultaneously, enough force is produce d to create an earthquake. i don’t know how true it is.

There is no real progress outside democracy. Civilization is marked not by mechanical or structural achievements but by its contribution to the civilization primarily on lifting the quality of living of its people.

China, for all its worth, is a country of minimum freedom. Its policies are controlled by the communist pulitburo. Imagine a country run by few communist hands who can dictate who to live and who to die. (Ie, invasion of Tibet and the ouster of the hapless Dalai Lama.)

Economically, it is the US who put this upon themselves. They sought for cheaper labor and high returns (corporate greed and social avarice) and they found China, waiting - due to its huge population. Plus, Bush managed to ruin the international reputation of this country only in 8 years with his meaningless wars.

Fortunately, bright days are ahead here in America. If the Americans decide to focus on the things that made it giant on the first place, that is technology geared towards alternative source of energy, instead of WMD and shifts its focus on other developing nations, all will be well.

America is still great. It is just getting a bad rep, which is good. So it can now turn its attention to heal itself, unless the next president is a dumb ass as Bush is. Then China and Russia will gang up to influence the rest of the world… once again.
