Filipinos Lost Jose Rizal
July 30th, 2007 posted by pcs under Uncategorized. [ Comments: 8 ]

“My dream,” wrote Rizal to a Spanish governor-general, “was my country’s prosperity . . . I would like the Filipino people to become worthy, noble, and honorable.”

On another occasion Rizal also wrote: “I would like the Filipinos to be Brilliant, Enlightened, Intelligent, and Progressive.”

Ever since Rizal was executed by the religious morons in the 19th century, the same religious morons carried on with power and authority to be in charge especially of the system of education in the Philippines. Indeed, we were taught in our schools, colleges, and universities to believe and to have faith in the holy bible that clearly states: “Love not this world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not with him.” John 2:15.  Jesus, the loving son of God also preached: “If any man come to me and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple.” Luke 14:26

Thus, as the Sick Man of Asia, even the Knights of Rizal continue to ignore what Rizal was saying to all Filipinos more than a century ago. Only people in foreign countries believed, followed, and substantiated what Rizal was saying. After Rizal’s execution, the president of the Berlin Society for Anthropology, Ethnology and Pre-history, - Dr. Rudolph Virchow, said: “In him we lose not only a true friend of Germany and German science but also the man who had the knowledge and the energy to introduce modern ideas and thinking into the Philippines.”    Poch Suzara

Oscar-winning German film ‘The Lives Of Others lead star just died
July 26th, 2007 posted by JB under Uncategorized. [ Comments: 2 ]

Ulrich Muehe

Just months ago, I saw the Oscar-winning film The Lives Of Others. It was an amazing piece of work, and you could tell that director Florian Heckel von Donnersmarck (never mind the almost impossible to remember name) must have had the story bouncing around in his head for years, polishing it even before the whole thing became a shooting script.

Well, its lead actor, Ulrich Muehe, very recently died. He had stomach cancer. He was only 54. What a huge loss.

If you haven’t seen the film yet, it’s very cleverly made, and deeply touching. Somehow, it probably got under my skin because Muehe’s character, a spy for East Germany’s Stasi, and the troubles he endured were almost the same things I wanted to infuse into the protagonist of my little-known story, “Blind Spot.” Only that von Donnersmarck’s character was a lot more complicated and sophisticated and “more real” — which easily made it a subject of my “literary envy.”

I remember after watching it, the ending roused me enough to make some sort of a standing ovation alone in my room as the film’s credits rolled up, all the while muttering, “I either must learn how to create characters like that, or I’d cut off my fingers.”

Because it very rarely happens (at least, with me) that a movie could be so “perfect” that I couldn’t even identify any single thing that’s out of place. So like they say, it’s such a “tour de force” it simply blows you away.
Just as Muehe was breaking into the international scene with his first Oscar-winning performance, he dies like that.

There’s an old scene in Seinfeld where Jerry tells George that to make a good impression, leave on a high note so people will always remember that one last good thing you did and not all your previously mediocre stuff.

Maybe that’s exactly what Muehe did. He left on a high note. And what a darned high note it was.

Tapunan pa rin ba ng mga “incompetents” ang Liberal Arts College?
July 26th, 2007 posted by Evil_Kneevil under Opinion. [ Comments: 7 ]

Can you believe Manila is one of the world’s most honest cities?
July 24th, 2007 posted by JB under Bits & Pieces. [ Comments: 6 ]

Reader’s Digest recently had this little social experiment: they dropped 30 cellphones in different cities in the world, and waited how many will be returned.

Manila ranked fifth (along with India’s Mumbai and the USA’s New York) as shown in this city-by-city chart.

Turning the tables on the advertisers
July 24th, 2007 posted by JB under Bits & Pieces. [ Comments: 1 ]

I used to work in advertising. Well, sort of. I even wrote a very cynical story about the little process of how advertisers influence the thinking of ordinary folks. The interesting twist, however, is provided by Derren Brown in the video below, brilliantly demonstrating how advertisers are subliminally influenced by the things they see around them. It’s sort of turning the table on the influencers. That full-page ad you see in the newspaper today, for instance, could reflect how its advertiser’s day went. For mass com grads (like me) or students, I suggest you view this video, especially through the end when Derren makes his revelation.

China is all set to rule the world
July 23rd, 2007 posted by JB under Bits & Pieces. [ Comments: 19 ]

I think it was Jose Rizal who had said it more than a century ago that “China is a sleeping giant,” or something to that effect (Pepe Alas, feel free to correct my inaccuracies). The truth of that could strike you starkly in the eye if you’d look at the latest forex reserves by country, which indicates that China currently tops the world for having $1.3 trillion. Even the USA stands only at 19th (thanks to George Bush for ballooning that country’s deficit by trillions more), a fact that puts it in China’s debt (you can say China has the USA’s ass and it can actually sink that country if it desires). While the Philippines is 37th with $26.4 billion.

Currently, people are curious if you could actually live without using “Made In China” products, as this reporter found out how tricky it is. All these make studying the dynamics of China’s economy very compelling — and maybe this present century, if the USA continues mucking it up, will prove to be China’s century.

I’m not sure if it’s good or bad.

Incorruptible McDonald’s fries
July 15th, 2007 posted by JB under Bits & Pieces. [ Comments: 1 ]

Morgan Spurlock, the man behind the documentary Supersize Me (that’s the one where Morgan ate nothing but McDonald’s food for a month to prove how fastfood fare can easily mess up your system) is seen here “demonstrating” how McDonald’s fries don’t seem to decompose. Ten weeks into the experiment, with the subject fries still looking like it was just put there the day before, Morgan asks the question: “Is this what we’re putting in our stomach?”
